Amritadhara
This project is a joint healthcare initiative between Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Viswasanthi Development Foundation
The genesis of the project is work which was being carried out by Amrita hospital under the direction of Amrita Ashram. The project started off with the assistance directed at the surgeries to rectify congenital heart issues in children below the age of 10. The project scope was later widened to encompass several other surgical procedures for children from underprivileged backgrounds.
Goals
To provide financial assistance in 100 surgical interventions for underprivileged children a financial year. Over a period of 5 years, we plan to increase the number of assists to 500 per year.
Objectives
Amrita Hospital, over the years have run specialised medical camps in different parts of the country in association with local hospitals or social service organisations and has finetuned a discovery process. Once identified, the child along with a parent is transported to Amrita Hospital in Kochi for a pre- scheduled surgery. All expenses including travel, surgery and post-operative care and medicines are fully absorbed by Amrita Hospital and Viswsanthi Foundation.
Challenges
The challenging part of the project is to identify children who have congenital issues which must be rectified ideally before the age of 12. Parents from underprivileged backgrounds often ignore the symptoms that appear or are unable to take their children to qualified paediatric doctors.
